Nike Air Pegasus+ 27 GTX - First Impressions

I will be participating in the OXFAM 100k Trailwalker event this summer. I finally settled on the Nike Air Pegasus+ 27 GTX in mid February. I have been doing a lot of training in High Park and noticed that after about a month, the soles started separating from the shoe! I took them back to The Running Room where I purchased them, and they ordered a new pair for me. I was reassured that it was unusual that they fell apart like that.

A week later I went back to the store and walked about 12k home to help break them in. The first pair that I bought were temperamental. Every once and a while it felt like there was something small, like a folded piece of kleenex under the ball of my foot. What really confused me about this sensation was firstly that there was never anything abnormal in my shoe, and secondly that sometimes I felt it, and sometimes I didn't. Very bizarre. Luckily it wasn't uncomfortable, it was just annoying. The second pair did not have this problem though.

I had taken the shoes on a 25k bike ride in the middle of a snowstorm that turned into rain about half way. The Gore-tex kept me dry for the first part of the trip, but the rain proved to be too much. I can't tell if the water was coming through the shoe, or if it was simply just seeping through the mouth of the shoe. Probably both. Either way, when I got home, my feet were soaked and a little cold. That was a rather extreme test though, and for regular puddle splashing, I've found these shoes to do a fantastic job of keeping water out. However, if you submerge your shoe, don't expect any miracles.

I've had the second pair for less than two months, and was disappointed to see that the soles are starting to separate again. I thought a company like Nike would be holding up better than this. Within four months, I've worn though two pairs of brand new shoes...

Great looking shoes! Durability, not so great...
So in these pictures you can see where the soles are starting to separate. With my first pair, these pieces fell off entirely.
I'll be returning them shortly, and hopefully I won't have any problems. My worry is that I'll have to break in yet another pair of shoes, and my 100k walk is within a month! I'm pretty frustrated because they are the first pair of running shoes that I've liked the look of in years, they were fairly comfortable, they were waterproof, but the soles suck. Who knows, maybe third time's a charm.

** Update August 1st, 2012: I tried returning the second pair of Pegasus GTXs before my OXFAM walk, and was told that I could not receive a refund nor could I exchange them. I was crushed because that meant I had to participate in the OXFAM Trailwalker with a pair of shoes who's soles were already falling apart.

I'm happy to say though, that I completed the 100km challenge (writeup posted here.) with the Pegasus GTXs. A bunch of the rubber fell off along the way, but that was more of an annoyance than anything else. My feet were comfortable, and I only had minor blistering compared to the devastation I saw on other walkers. Three weeks after the event, the balls of my feet are still tender. But after walking 100km, I wasn't expecting that I'd be in great shape.

I sent an email to the Running Room regarding my experiences and their staff were more than accommodating to get me in a pair of shoes that worked for me without additional cost to me. When I met up with the Running Room rep, he looked at my shoes and told me that since pieces were falling off both the inside AND the outside of the shoes, it had nothing to do with the way I was walking and it was the glue that was used to adhere the soles to the shoe. The shame of it all was that the two pairs I had were anomalies. It's my understanding that they had not received any other complaints about this model falling apart.

As of today, I'm in a new pair of Asics GT-2160 Trail shoes, and I couldn't be happier. Expect a First Impression review in a few months!
